I was thinking of a place where my family and I can have good food for my wife’s birthday. Fine dining and buffets are out due to time and budget constraints, but I don’t want to be a cheapskate by going with fast food. It’s my wife’s birthday, and it needs to have an extra oomph!
I remembered that there’s the new Shake Shack at Jewel! It sells fast food at Jewel providing that oomph. We got dressed and headed there on a rainy Saturday morning. We took the bus to the airport and walked leisurely to Shake Shack.
As we were walking around, I noticed a small sign…
I was ecstatic! It’s the Shake Shack sign. The store must be right around the corner. Then…
Oh man!!! It’s a 3 part queue. Time check 12:30.
We met a friend while we were queueing. I noticed that they’ve been to Shake Shack judging their take-away paper bag. I asked how long would the queue be. She replied “Mabilis lang yan!” (it’s just fast). My spirits were lifted up, as I’m starting to be hungry. If the queue moves fast, then it’s alright. I can wait for the food. It rather got me excited. Then I asked a follow up question, “How fast is fast?” to which my heart dropped as she replied “Mga 45 min lang.”
45 min! Just to wait on queue! 45 min might as well be eternity to a hungry family. I was already thinking of other places to eat, those with not so long queues, those that can immediately feed the hungry ME.
But then, it had me thinking, why would these people behind me risk of dying of hunger rather than go to the next restaurant? This place must be good. It must be and should be worth the wait.
Time check 1:25
The queue took an hour! Good thing we haven’t passed out yet. At this point I feel that I can eat everything on the menu. Luckily there’s a sign signifying the purchasing limits. We then proceeded to order. Another 10 minutes passed before our orders were served.
Mains - ShackBurger, SmokeShack & ‘Shroom Burger
Yup, I bought them all! They said the limit is 5, I’m getting 5 then.
I was pleasantly surprised with the ‘Shroom Burger. It has the perfect balance of tanginess with the right amount of seasoning. The ShackBurger tasted ordinary. Then comes the SmokeShack. This burger made the 70 min between deciding to eat here, to actually eating here seemed reasonable. I felt so proud of myself for having the patience to wait in line and not to give up. I forgot all my frustrations, my worries and my concern. It’s a wonderful comfort food, as I felt comforted with every bite. The pink, & juicy beef patty infused with smoke, perfectly seasoned, topped with soft buns. You would go great lengths for this burger.
Desserts - Classic Hand Spun Salted Caramel Shake, Shack Attack, Jewala Melaka (Singapore Exclusive) and Pandan Shake (Singapore Exclusive)
You would never think that this store is shortchanging you in any of the ingredients. You have a heavy dose of everything. Tons of cream on the shake. Sweet caramel and coconuts abound. My wife and kids said that this stuff is so sweet, you need a glass (or two) of water by your side. For me personally, its just about right. Coconut is one of my favorites, so I’m really happy with the pandan shake.
Sides: Shack-cago Dog, Crinkle Cut Fries
The fries are big, and surprisingly crunchy. Other stores would serve the fries, but most of them end up being soggy. The fries here remained stiff and crunchy despite the cold temp and the cheese on top. One thing to note, to doesn't come as meal so the burger and fries must be ordered separately. Shack-cago dog needs to be revisited, as I totally forgot about them as I ate the SmokeShack.
Shake Shack menu seems to be limited and simple, but the few things they do, they do it really well. The price might deter you of frequent trips, but a trip must be made. Their food is definitely worth a try.
